Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)

A few years ago the makers of mobile phones and other hand-held devices such as PDA's realised that it would be a good idea to allow these machines to be able to connect to the internet in a standard way. It made no sense for every manufacturer to invent their own method of doing so.

So they put together the 'WAP Forum' that had the job of producing this standard.

So if you see the 'WAP enabled' claim on the device then you know the mobile phone or PDA will be able to connect and view web pages that have been delivered through a WAP 'gateway'.
