Wide Area Network (WAN)

A wide area network or WAN is a computer network that joins computers together over long distances.

Computers on a WAN can be joined using the public telephone system, fibre optic cables, satellites or other means.

Many WANs are built for one particular company and are private. Others, built by Internet Service Providers, connect individuals to the Internet.
