MMORPG

Short for "Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game". This is quite a mouthful, so the acronym MMORPG is used normally.

This is a game designed to be played through the Internet. Millions of players create an account and then share a virtual world where the game is played out.

The developers normally provide challenges such as levels and rewards for individual players. They allow groups of people to work together towards a goal. They encourage 'guilds' to form which is a bit like an online tribe.

Even real money changes hands on auction sites, as player are willing to pay for magic weapons and ready-built characters.

For example 'World of Warcraft" is a very popular MMORPG.
