Flash

A software application originally developed by Macromedia and now owned by Adobe.

Flash is a very popular method of adding animations, video, sound and user interaction within a web page.

Flash comes in two parts.

1. A Flash Player, which is free to download from the Adobe site. About 98% of all computers now have a version of Flash player installed.

2. An authoring application that enables you to create Flash files. These files have a .SWF file extension.

There are a number of Flash authoring packages, the current Adobe one is called Flash CS3 but there are others such as Swift3d that can produce SWF files.

Flash is also used on millions of mobile phones and recently Adobe have launched AIR which allows Flash to run on the desktop rather than within a browser.
