Ergonomics

Ergonomics is the science of designing things with the comfort, safety and efficiency of people in mind. For example car makers do a huge amount of ergonomic research to make sure their cars are as comfortable, safe and easy to use as possible. They know the average sizes of people of all ages from babies to old age, they also know how people vary from the average, this is used to design car seats and the inside of the car.

Ergonomics allow designs of computer workplaces to be as safe and efficient as possible - for example the chair needs to a certain height, distance from the monitor needs to be just so. The light needs to not too bright and not too dim.
