E-book

An E-book is an electronic book or magazine publication. (There may not be a paper version). The digital file is loaded into a computer containing an e-reader application. Or it is loaded into a dedicated e-book device such as the Kindle.

E-books are presented in traditional book or magazine form - chapters, articles etc. In fact they may duplicate the way its paper version appears.

The XML-based EPUB file is the most widely supported vendor-independent format. However, each vendor also has its own proprietary format so it cannot be read by other vendor devices. For example Amazon and Apple have their own formats.

E-books are also very popular with independent authors as there are no printing costs involved and it is easy to distribute as a download.
