Directory

Part of the file system that is managed by the operating system. All operating systems have directory structures for handling files although details differ between them.

Files are organised into a hierarchy of directories. Each directory contains one or more files. For example a 'directory tree' might look like this.

\myfile.txt
\MYDOCS\morfile.exe
\MYDOCS\display.ppt

The 'myfile.txt' example is in the top directory, often called the 'root'. All the others are in a directory called mydocs.

Another name for directory is 'folder'.
