Demodulate

An electronic engineering term. You 'demodulate' a signal in order to extract the information it carries.

'Information' in this case can be anything - sound, music, television, internet data, video stream, spoken voice and so on.

For example you would use a car radio to 'demodulate' Radio 1. You would use a 'modem' to demodulate the signal coming from the internet.

In fact 'modem' is a made-up word meaning 'MODulate-DEModulate.
