ALU - Arithmetic and Logic Unit

The ALU is vital part of central processing unit (CPU). The ALU carries out calculations such as adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. The ALU also carries out logic operations such as comparing two operands.

The ALU is controlled by a number of machine code instructions that are part of the CPU instruction set.

Some CPUs contain more than one ALU. One may only carry out fast fixed point calculations whilst another one is optimised for floating point calculations
